Sonic is an American fast-food joint that first started out as a root beer stand back in the 1950s. Over the years, it’s grown to become the biggest drive-in chain in the US and now has restaurants in 3,558 locations. Known as the master of milkshakes and famed for its footlong hotdogs and mozzarella sticks, it might sound a little challenging to eat vegan at Sonic. But don’t worry, at Vegan Unlocked, we’re the pros at making the seemingly impossible possible. Equipped with our Vegan Unlocked secret menu, full vegan menu, and editor’s picks, you’ll still be able to get a sweet deal and slurp on one of Sonic’s many slushes.

The Vegan Unlocked Research Team combed through all 54 items on the Sonic menu and came away with one unmissable custom creation and two on-menu options.

Sonic scores 2 of 5 stars as a restaurant with few vegan options. So, while you won’t find any oat milk in its milkshakes, you can still enjoy a Sonic slush brain freeze and grab a satisfying bite to eat.

This score is calculated based on the number of vegan offerings on Sonic’s menu “as is” or with an easy substitution, a restaurant vegan customizability score and finally, the number of vegan options vs non-vegan options. Learn more about how Vegan Unlocked Ratings are calculated.

Secret Menu

When a restaurant isn’t explicit about its vegan options, it’s understandable to think that it may not cater to vegan customers at all. However, sometimes, you just need to take a closer inspection of a menu to find the hidden vegan gems. We know that this isn’t always easy, so we got our team of vegan researchers to hack the Sonic vegan menu for you, and they came up with a seriously tasty treat.

Veggie Sandwich:

Order a grilled cheese but hold the cheese. Then, throw in some lettuce, avocado, tomato, grilled onions, pickles, and jalapeños, and select a vegan sauce of your choice. If you want to stick to the classics, go for ketchup, but if you’re feeling adventurous, why not add some buffalo sauce?
